I teach women how to be friends with their bodies through movement and mindfulness
My name is Karen Rocha and I’m so glad you’ve come across my website. Whether you are looking to move more, relax more or tune in more deeply to yourself, I would love to be a part of your journey.
Please let me tell you a little about myself.
I am a first generation Canadian, born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario to Portuguese immigrant parents. Growing up in this blue collar town and in an immigrant community provided me with many lessons early in life. I learned early that no matter what the circumstances, life always provides opportunities to make improvements when you apply time and effort to your goals. My parents taught me the importance of community, family, a strong work ethic and perhaps most importantly, how to enjoy a good meal!
Growing up, I was an eager learner, hoarding books and expanding my imagination and knowledge as much as possible, and I still hold a deep love of learning.
For almost 20 years, I worked in the corporate sector in various high stress roles with tight deadlines, big projects, occasional conflict, many different personalities and I was STRESSED OUT! I heard yoga was great for stress management so I thought I would give it a shot. What started as a method to get me out of my head and into my body quickly became a quasi obsession and has evolved into a passion. I fell completely in love with yoga and the sense of grounding it brought to my life. I knew I had to learn more so within just a few months of starting my practice, I decided to enroll in a yoga teacher training program. I had no idea of the journey I was about to embark on – it was life changing. I soon found that my practice guided me to go deeply inward, to explore my own depths and shadows allowing me to learn so much more about myself and others. I found a way to balance movement with stillness allowing my body and mind to find places of deep peace. Being still human, the peace comes and goes. Life often becomes chaotic however, being able to come back to a mindful movement and meditation practice helps me come back to centre relatively quickly and easily. It’s a skill that I love to teach and share.
During my yoga teacher training, one of my fellow students introduced me to Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST). I went for one session and here I was again – hooked on this body work modality. I was astounded how after a single FST session, I was able to release long held pain in my hips and shoulders. I had to learn more! So I did. I enrolled in the next available FST Level 1 certification course.
My plan at the time, was to slowly build toward a retirement career in wellness which really excited me. You know, as in “down the road I would love to do this as a career” kind of thoughts. But life had other plans for me. In 2016, my corporate career kissed me good bye and here I found myself at a place where I had to make a conscious decision about what to do with my life. Was I going to stay in my comfort zone and seek out another role at another corporation or was I going to see this as an opportunity to pursue something I am truly passionate about? I chose the latter which is why I’m here writing about me (which is also way out of my comfort zone). It’s been a challenging road and it has been more rewarding than I could have imagined.
Since leaving corporate, I have dedicated myself to continuing my learning journey and to building my business. In 2018 I obtained my FST Level 2 certification and in 2019 completed principle certification training in Thai Yoga Massage. I have been working with my clients; teaching them to move better, feel better and do better so that they can live life on their terms. The change happens quickly and my clients have reported better sleep, increased energy, improved mood and feelings of vitality and ease in their body. I get such a thrill from teaching people to heal themselves and consider myself to be truly blessed to be able to do this work.
What else sets my soul on fire?
My family – my children, my partner Marc and my fur baby, Ruby. I LOVE to travel! I love to talk about travel, write about travel, think about where I’m going to travel next … you get the idea. In 2018 I co-hosted my first international yoga retreat to India and will host another international retreat to Azores, Portugal in August 2020. To learn more about my local and international retreats, please visit my retreats page.
So that’s a little bit about me and although it must be very interesting for you to read this, I would prefer a face to face conversation over a good cup of coffee and possibly a snack.
Let’s make it happen!
What Clients Think of Their Rocha Wellness Experience
“I was impressed at how quickly Karen was able to assess my needs which often changed on a weekly basis. She has a natural and warm approach and I felt that she really listened to me. But most importantly, she truly taught me how to listen to my own body and to determine exactly how I was feeling and to identify my needs”
“I am so thankful that you offer gentle strength classes. I have found that taking the class twice a week has had a huge impact on my body. I can sit cross legged on the floor, my ankles, wrists and shoulders have so much range of motion and I really do feel stronger at 62 years old. I wish I had started this sooner. I think my success has a lot to do with your excellent skills at guiding us through the practice. Thank you”
